| The role of the position | |||||||||
| The Aboriginal Education Manager will have key responsibility for the provision of advice and support to School Communities on matters relating to the education of Aboriginal students, particularly involved with literacy, numeracy and culturally inclusive curricula.
The Manager Aboriginal Education will be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of programs designed to support Aboriginal students achieve comparable educational outcomes by ensuring culturally inclusive curricula such as Aboriginal Studies, Aboriginal languages, Aboriginal perspectives across the curriculum are implemented. Ongoing consultation and liaison with the Aboriginal community is required to ensure that educational aspirations are identified and strategies developed and implemented in the areas sought by Aboriginal students and their families. The position provides advice and support to the Director, Schools/Director, Schools and Services on Aboriginal Education issues and systemic initiatives and communicates best practice and innovative strategies in order to ensure accountability and quality assurance for Aboriginal Education within the District. The Manager will provide educational leadership within the District Education Office and schools. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation; current Department of Education policies, guidelines and initiatives; negotiated industrial awards and agreements; and the districts management plan and priorities. | |||||||||
| Key duties of the position | |||||||||
| 1. Strategic leadership is provided in schools and the district to assist in the implementation of Department policies and priorities in schools, particularly the Aboriginal Education Operational Plan (AEOP) initiatives.
2. Schools and District Education Offices develop and implement an Aboriginal Education plan in accordance with the AEOP within their school development planning process. 3. Aboriginal Education policies and initiatives are implemented, monitored, reviewed and communicated between schools and Central Office. 4. Timely and efficient advice is provided through the district using available human, physical and financial resources. 5. Contributes to measurable and sustainable improvement in the educational outcomes for Aboriginal students with a significant improvement in Year 12 retention. 6. Liaison and negotiation is established, managed and maintained with internal and external clients, customers, stakeholders and particularly Aboriginal parents and community members as partners in promoting improved attendance, retention and educational outcomes for Aboriginal students in school to Year 12. 7. District Aboriginal Education personnel are selected and performance managed in accordance with Department policies and procedures. 8. Develops and implements district based programs that enhance the performance of Aboriginal students within the district. 9. Manages and provides advice on specific Aboriginal programs within the district such as NIELNS, IESIP and School Grants. | |||||||||
| Selection Criteria | |||||||||
| 1. Demonstrated understanding of the policies, frameworks, issues and processes supporting implementation of change in schools and their application to meeting the needs of Aboriginal communities.
2. In a devolved context demonstrated leadership and strategic management skills, particularly in the area of Aboriginal Education. 3. A high level of organisational management skills which include an understanding of system policies and procedures and the capacity to equitably and effectively allocate and manage physical and financial resources. 4. High level of interpersonal and public relations skills, including oral and written communication, that demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative team environment and to work cooperatively with others at all levels in the education system to achieve planned outcomes. 5. Conceptual and analytical skills that demonstrate an ability to identify and analyse issues and generate appropriate strategies to address them including policy development and strategic planning skills. 6. Demonstrated practical experience in initiating, developing, coordinating and managing complex programs, projects or strategies in an educational setting or inter-agency context. 7. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with the customer base of the Department of Education and a focus on the achievement of excellence in service delivery.
