Report Data Entry Mark Adjustment

The mark adjustment process allows the distribution of marks for students within an assessment outline to be manipulated to fit to an expected distribution. This is performed using Z scores and preventing a score greater than 100 and less than 0.

Two stages are available to the mark adjustment process.

Reporting Group

Marks for Non-Moderated tasks are adjusted for students within the reporting group to fit an expected mean and standard deviation. This is designed to adjust marks where variations exist in the marking of students in different groups in an assessment outline. Tasks identified in the assessment outline as Moderated are not adjusted in this process as it is expected that Moderated tasks are subject to internal moderation process such as well-defined marking keys and cross marking to ensure comparable marks across groups. The final mark for students in the group will the weighted total of the moderated tasks marks and adjusted total of the non-moderated tasks. As task marks are entered, the adjustment process will recalculate the Cum Weigh Total% mark for all students in the group based on the changed mean and standard deviation.

Overall

The final distribution of all students within the assessment outline either following or without Reporting Group adjustment is adjusted to fit to an expected mean and standard deviation. Changes to task marks for any student in the assessment outline will result in a recalculation of the Cum Weight Total% for all other students in the assessment outline. For this reason, once Overall mark adjustment values have been entered all groups must be merged for any data entry to occur.

 

A mark adjustment process is available where an assessment outline has been defined and the mark adjustment process has been enabled. The Mark Adjustment icon will not be active for groups that do not have an assessment outline.

Mark adjustment can be performed on a single or merged group.

It is possible to perform Reporting Group adjustment only, Overall adjustment only or both adjustments together.

 

Mark adjustment can be enabled from the assessment outline or group data entry windows. Once mark adjustment for an assessment outline has been enabled, an additional column is added to the Tasks pane that will allow Moderated and Non-Moderated tasks to be identified.

To enable mark adjustment click on the Allow mark adjustment checkbox.

 

Moderated Tasks	Tasks subject to internal moderation process such as the use of well-defined marking keys and cross marking that ensure comparable marks across groups. Moderated tasks are excluded from group adjustment process. Typically, the semester examination may be considered a moderated task. This is the default value.
Non-Moderated Tasks	Tasks not subject to internal moderation and where variation in marking may occur between different reporting groups. Non-Moderated tasks will be included in group adjustment processes.

 

To open the Mark Adjustment window:

1.	Open the reporting group(s) for data entry

2.	Click on the Mark Adjustment icon

The components of the Mark Adjustment window are as follows

 

Allow Mark Adjustment	When selected, the Cum Weight Total% will be recalculated according to the Group and Overall adjustment values entered.
Overall Mean	The expected mean of the Cum Weight Total% for all students in the assessment outline.
Overall Std Dev	The expected standard deviation of the Cum Weight Total% for all students in the assessment outline.
Group	The groups that are associated with the assessment outline.
Teacher(s)	The teacher(s) for each of the groups within the assessment outline
Year	The academic year levels for students in the group
Size	The number of students in the group
Total Unadjusted Mean	The mean of all tasks prior to any mark adjustment
Total Unadjusted Standard Deviation	The standard deviation for all tasks prior to any mark adjustment
Moderated Mean	The mean for tasks selected as Moderated in the assessment outline prior to any mark adjustment.
Moderated Standard Deviation	The standard deviation for tasks selected as Moderated in the assessment outline prior to any mark adjustment
Not Moderated Mean (%)	The mean for tasks not selected as Moderated in the assessment outline prior to any mark adjustment
Not Moderated Standard Deviation	The standard deviation for tasks not selected as Moderated in the assessment outline prior to any mark adjustment
Not Moderated Adjusted Mean (%)	The proposed mean for tasks not selected as Moderated in the assessment outline
Not Moderated Adjusted Standard Deviation	The proposed standard deviation for tasks not selected as Moderated in the assessment outline
Adjusted Mean (%)	The mean for all tasks following the mark adjustment
Adjusted Standard Deviation	The standard deviation for all tasks following the mark adjustment

 

3.	Click on the Allow Mark Adjustment checkbox to enable group and overall mark adjustment

4.	Enter the adjusted mean and standard deviation for any un-moderated tasks.

5.	Enter the required Overall Mean and Overall Standard Deviation

Note: Once an overall mean and standard deviation are entered all groups within the assessment outline must be merged to enter reporting data.

6.	Click on Save

7.	If Overall Mean and Standard Deviation values have been recorded the following warning will appear. Click on OK.

8.	The Total Mark and Final Mark fields will be adjusted to suit the requested distribution. These can be overridden. Adjusted marks are shown in green.

 

To view the unadjusted marks for students, right click on the Cum Weight Total% column header to toggle between adjusted, unadjusted and raw totals.

The column header will change to indicate the data type. These are:

Cum Weight Total%	The adjusted cumulative weighted total of task marks entered expressed as a percentage. If adjustment is enabled, these will be shown in green.
Cum Weight Total#	The unadjusted weighted raw total of task marks. This may not be a percentage but will be the actual marks accumulated.
UA Cum Weight Total	The unadjusted cumulative weighted total of task marks entered expressed as a percentage. This value will be used if mark adjustment is deselected.

The Cum Weight Total% value will be used to determine the Total Mark and Final Mark.
